Study on Bioactive Calcium Silicate Used Brookhaven’s BI-200SM

A. Meiszterics and K. Sinkó from the L. Eötvös University, conducted a research entitled, “Study of Bioactive Calcium Silicate Ceramic Systems for Biomedical Applications” which strived to understand correlations in the chemical composition, solubility and mechanical properties of calcium silicate ceramic materials. The researchers made use of the Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) method in this study witht Brookhaven’s BI-200SM to determine the aggregate size of ceramic powders, which was used in sintering bulk calcium silicate ceramics.

The sol-gel synthesized ceramics were then studied to determine its properties in relation with biomedical applications. The study was able to present the best bulk ceramics with good mechanical strength, similar porosity to bone and low solubility, which can be used as long-term implants.
