Hydrophobic silver nanoparticles trapped in lipid bilayers: Size distribution, bilayer phase behavior, and optical properties

The journal of Nanobiotechnology recently published a study entitled “Hydrophobic silver nanoparticles trapped in lipid bilayers: Size distribution, bilayer phase behavior, and optical properties,” that cited Brookhaven BI-200SM Goniometer in the analysis of assemblies’ hydrodynamic diameter and stability. This study conducted by Goeffrey Bothun aimed to achieve nanoparticle encapsulation by trapping particles within the hydrophobic lipid bilayer. The study focused on nanoparticles that can lead to lipid packing alterations and may disrupt lipid-lipid interactions amongst head groups or acyl tails.

The DLS samples were then analyzed at 0.4 mM1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). Size distributions were then extracted using a continuous non-negative least squares (NNLS) fit of the autocorrelation function (RMS<3.6 x 10-3). More methods like Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy were executed, and nanoparticles were analyzed, finding that characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength of the embedded nanoparticles was autonomous of the bilayer phase. SPR absorbance, however, was reliant on vesicle aggregation.
