Eggs, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL’s, Curcumin and Weight Loss / Fat Loss

In the study, “Egg Yolk Granule Nanoparticles as Bioactive Nanocarriers for Curcumin Delivery: Intrinsic Hypolipidemic Activity and Combined Efficacy in Obese Mice,” chicken egg yolk granule (EYG) nanoparticles (EYG NPs) have enhanced effects when loaded with curcumin.

Egg yolk granule nanoparticles are natural complexes of protein and lipid. Modifications to these nanoparticles can enhance their digestibility, solubility and stability. EYG NPs have been studied to improve the digestibility of encapsulated nutrients and have shown promise in enhancing the functional performance of lipophilic bioactive compounds in food and pharmaceutical applications.

In this study, EYGs were prepared for curcumin encapsulation, resulting in EYG/curcumin nanoparticles (EYG/Cur NPs). In vivo experiments demonstrated that EYG NPs significantly reduced serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels by 21.3%, 38.4%, and 36.4%, respectively, in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. The EYG/Cur NPs exhibited an even greater hypotriglyceridemic effect, lowering serum TG levels by 50.7%, likely due to the combined action of curcumin and EYGs. Furthermore, these nanoparticles notably decreased body weight, white adipose tissue mass, and hepatic lipid accumulation.

The size of the nanocarriers was measured using a Brookhaven Instruments dynamic light scattering particle sizer instrument, providing insights into their nanoscale properties.

This study demonstrates that curcumin delivered with significantly higher bioavailability may have significant implications on human weight gain/weight loss and obesity. This research also offers a novel approach for developing Egg Yolk Granule nanocarriers that may increase bioavailability of otherwise poorly-absorbed active compounds This study may, indeed, prove to have deep implications on bioactive compound delivery/absorption mechanisms and drug encapsulation that extend far beyond curcumin.
