Anoop Austin from Rumi Herbals’ R&D Centre, presented a study that demonstrated mercurial and gold preparation in nanoparticle form.The study was entitled “Chemical Characterization Of A Gold And Mercury Based Siddha Sasthric Preparation-Poorna Chandrodayan”.
Poorna chandrodayan (PC) is an elixir of mercury and gold widely used in Siddha Medicine for various weakening diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the content of gold, mercury, and sulfur in the preparation, which was vital for the chemical standardization method of this formulation. PC bioabsorption was also analyzed with modern techniques to ascertain the content, potency, and validation of the elixir.
To facilitate this study, three separate batches of PC suspended in aqueous dispersing phase and filtering were investigated using a dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique performed with the NanoBrook 90Plus Particle Size Analyzer.
Anoop Austin, through his work, discovered that nano-sized Poorna chandrodovan enabled better bio-absorption. The study also confirmed that PC was a gold and mercury amalgamation drug, mostly present as mercury sulfide and a portion of oxide with gold. Austin’s study gave way to determining a standardized method to preparing PC, which is said to relieve patients of ailments like tuberculosis, jaundice, fever, rat bite, cancerous ulcer, sprue, arthralgia and male sterility.
