The Journal of Controlled Release presented a study entitled “Investigation Of The Factors Influencing The Release Rates Of Cyclosporin A-Loaded Micro- And Nanoparticles Prepared By High-Pressure Homogenizer”. The study, conducted by Woo-kyoung Lee and his colleagues, used Brookhaven’s BI-200SM to aid them in preparing cyclosporin A (CyA)–loaded particles varying in size, polymer composition and additive fatty acid ester.

The lyophilized particles used in this study were dispersed in water. The mean particle size was then measured through a dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique, using Brookhaven’s BI-200SM Goniometer. The factors of the prepared CyA-loaded polymeric micro- and nanoparticles were then observed for their effects. These factors included the polymers involved, size and the additive ethyl myristate (EM). The data gathered allowed the researchers to demonstrate how these factors could control the CyA-loaded polymeric micro- and nanoparticles. It was also found that controlling these factors could improve the oral delivery system of CyA when particles are applied to in vivo experiments.

Cycosporin A, a highly hydrophobic cyclic peptide, is used in the prevention of xenograft rejection following organ transplantation, as well as in the treatment of patients with selected autoimmune diseases. However, some problems with the available dosage forms of CyA for treatment still remain, thus the need for further scientific study and investigation. Brookhaven Instruments has a wide array of instruments that can help scientific investigations in industries, including biomedical engineering.

Brookhaven Instruments provides rapid, reliable and convenient particle size analyzers for both static and dynamic light scattering techniques. The BI-200SM Goniometer allows for both Static Light Scattering (SLS) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) techniques and is just one of Brookhaven Instruments’ line of top quality, state-of-the-art particle size analyzers.
