BI-200SM Goniometer Used in Nanoparticle Dynamic Light Scattering

In the study entitled “Strain specificity in Antimicrobial Activity of Silver and Copper Nanoparticles,” four strains of Escherichia coli, three strains of each Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus Aureus were used to assess the antimicrobial properties of silver and copper nanoparticles. The Brookhaven BI-200SM Goniometer was used in particle size measurement of suspended nanoparticles via dynamic light scattering (DLS).

Bacterial experiments were carried out, preparations of solid media followed, samples were further prepared, and characterized before undergoing particle size analysis. After silver and nanoparticle suspension in deionized (DI) water and nutrient media and sonication for 10 minutes, the flasks were then incubated before measuring the size of the suspended nanoparticles by obtaining particle size distribution via DLS using Brookhaven’s BI-200SM Goniometer.

Silver and copper ions have been known to have antimicrobial properties and as superior disinfectants for wastewater generated from hospitals containing infectious microorganisms. Learning how to manipulate these silver and copper nanoparticles can lead to discoveries that may greatly impact applications in the fields of medical devices, food processing, and water treatment. Researchers concluded that “ that silver and copper nanoparticles have great promise as antimicrobial agent against E.coli, B. subtilis, and S. aureus.

Brookhaven provides quick, reliable, and efficient particle analyzers for similar applications, where accurate and reproducible results are important. The BI-200SM Goniometer enables optimal DLS for any relevant application. This quality goniometer from Brookhaven is only one of the manufacturer’s top-of-the-line particle size analyzers.
