In the study, Shelf-Stable, Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Patches: Dip-and-Deliver Solutions for Personalized Wound Care, researchers were able to demonstrate the therapeutic potential of an auxetic skin mesh drug delivery platform for diabetic wound healing.  The mesh adheres instantly to the skin, can deliver a variety of therapeutics through a dip-and-deliver process, and is shelf-stable.

The platform effectively delivers various cargos, including nanoparticles, vesicles, proteins and small molecules with controlled release and enhanced angiogenesis in diabetic mice. This highlights its potential as a versatile bioadhesive system for improving wound healing.

The mesh system, being biodegradable, self-adhering, and mechanically sound upon application to the skin, represents an improvement upon current wound dressings that often require staples or sutures for fixation.

As part of the research, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) were synthesized and their size determined by the Brookhaven Instruments NanoBrook 90 Plus Zeta instrument before being loaded with PDGF-BB and Gentamicin, two clinically relevant drugs for diabetic wound healing. The work demonstrated the therapeutic potential of this novel mesh system where impaired tissue regeneration is a major clinical challenge.

Brookhaven Instruments are pleased to have had a small part in advancing this critical area of research. Our NanoBrook series of light scattering and zeta potential instruments has been at the forefront of scientific discovery for decades.
